Coffee County Historical Society

Welcome to

The Coffee County Historical Society

The Coffee County Historical Society was founded in 1969 by a group of individuals who sought to preserve and record the history of the county and its people. The Society meets on a bi-monthly and we have programs designed around a specific topic relating to the history, genealogy, folklore and archaeology of the county. The Society meets at its office & research room in the Historical Coffee County Courthouse, 101 West Fort Street, “on the County Square,” in Manchester, Tennessee.

Pictures of the Past– The Coffee County Historical Society has over 100,000 photographic negatives that we are currently scanning and saving from the Hugh Doak collection.  Mr. Doak was the editor of the Manchester Times from 1916 until early 1960s.  He also operated his own photographic studio.  His photos uniquely documented the history and people of Manchester and Coffee County. Check here for examples and indexes of subjects of the photographs.  The indexes are a work in progress and updated often.
